At the time of this posting, around 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, my husband Jim has already measured today's snow in our front yard. Phoenixville has an "unofficial" measurement of 17 inches! Not shabby for a nor'easter in these parts. Of course, that total will change before the storm finally moves out of the area later this evening.
Even as the record breaking storm made it's way up I-95 last night, I was already learning of the kind deeds of others. Jack Ayres, among others, I'm sure, volunteered to transport stranded nurses and other needed employees from their homes to Phoenixville Hospital, while Wally Heidlemark, bundled up in his parka and with his snowplow humming, cleared the sidwalks in darkness for all his neighbors on Second Avenue. Thanks, Jack and Wally!
I checked the borough's website for any local emergency information, but nothing has been posted, so use your commonsense.
It's very important that we take time today to check on the senior citizens and others in our neighborhood. They may need our help.
If you don't have to go out, don't.
According to borough ordinance, snow should be removed within 24 hours of a snowfall. Be careful and pace yourself. (Where are all the kids with snowshovels for hire these days?)
Then, relax and enjoy the day because under all that snow the daffodils and crocus are about to awaken!

This nor'easter is now officially the second largest storm for the Philadelphia area in history.
A record 28.5 inches and winter isn't over yet!

Do you know what that mess was on Bridge Street today? Isn't that supposed to be a snow emergency route? Were the backhoes for that reason or for the businesses? I wanted to see what my tax dollars are paying for.

Backhoes had huge piles of snow in the middle of the Bridge Street and the road was closed most of the morning. Isn't that a snow emergency route?
I didn't see the activity but I
suspect it was the Borough clearing the parking areas, including those along Bridge St. so First Friday and any Super Bowl customer activity could find parking. The alternative was to push the snow up onto the sidewalks. Some people are just never happy. They compain when it isn't done and complain when it is.
During a phone call this morning, Borough Manager Jean Krack explained the enormous task the Streets Department faced (and is still working on) during the second worst nor'easter in the area's history.
In a compact community such as Phoenixville there is simply no place to put the snow.
Priority, he said, is given to the main arteries in town, the secondary arteries are next in line for plowing, along with the side roads.
Bridge Street is a snow emergency route and as a borough street the snow removal is a provided service.
Personally, Anonymous 8:33 a.m., I understand the 02/07 9:18 p.m. poster's concern. Basically, it is an issue of equal distribution of services especially during major snow storms.
However, on the other hand, the borough has a small, 7 man Streets Department crew, and they have worked to exhaustion trying to keep our thoroughfares open.
I would like to add my voice to Jean Krack's comments this morning in that the crew deserves plaudits for the amount of work they did during this storm.
Now, we have the situation of another storm Tuesday evening into Wednesday which is certainly going to compound any existing problems.
I've heard of many neighborhoods banding together and helping each other, another good example of the type of people who live in Phoenixville.
Looks like we all have another opportunity to "enjoy" this record-breaking year!
