Open thread

Hear ye, hear ye!

There has been a call for a new thread (people are bored apparently), and I've been extremely busy, so here is another opportunity to sound off on your issues, post your thoughts, or have a rant.

What's on your mind?

Anyone see whats going on on the Phoenix web site in regards to a SB Member and nepotism. Getting real ugly and this School Board who doesn't read blogs (they do) needs to have an open meeting with real dialogue and start clearing the air with the KES and the Audit.I heard it is in the hands of the proper authorities.

I think it is really great Phoenixville schools chose to not air Obamas' talk with students in VA. Not!!!

Politics aside, children should learn to respect the office if not the man who was duly elected by an overwhelming majority.

Grow up Phoenixville.

Before we have another crisis at a Council meeting that has to be "resolved tonight", when is the trash contract going out for bid again?
What happened to PAYT (pay as you throw)? I'm spending $276/year to put out one 13 gallon bag a week.

There was no nepotism. A school board member's daughter received a stipend for a band position for $2,000. The board voted 9-0 to approve it. Even if the school board parent hadn't voted, it still would've been 8-0. The nepotism law refers to relatives providing a position, not a small amount of money.

Here's the link. Majority of posts are crap and lies.

Having recently checked the Borough's updated web site I see that the Parking Authority membership seems to be short one. I'm pretty sure Adam Deveney (sp?) of Library expansion fame was not only a member but also held the Chairman's seat. Now he's not even listed as a meember. Does anyone know if and when he resigned???

Anonymous said...

Just received an update on the Adam Deveny (sp?) resignation from the Parking Authority. He apparently submitted a resignation letter August 12 or so and it took the Council President a month to read it into the record last night.

Anonymous said...

I heard thar Adam resigned over two weeks ago. More over I understand that there is a concerted effort to reach out to the candidates for Borough Council reguarding the Library Expansion.

I had heard the rumor last week that Adam Deveney, Chair of the Parking Authority had resigned from the Parking Authority. I sent an email to President Wagner and the rest of Council asking if the rumor was true. Wagner responded with the answer at last night’s Council meeting by reading Deveney’s resignation letter to Council dated August 12, 2009.

That was the first I heard officially of the resignation and I believe the first for other Council members as well. Keep in mind that none of this was disclosed by Wagner, the Borough Manager or any Parking Authority member at the August 25 meeting where the Authority asked the Borough to guarantee the $100,000 loan.

BTW, the loan guarantee passed at last night’s Council meeting 5-3 with Handwerk, Buckwalter, and Senley dissenting.

A big thank you to all the readers who bought the news of Deveney's resignation to the public.

I have a call into the borough manager and the resignation was to be among items I wished to discuss.

Thanks, Ken, for producing verification for us.

Now, why did Adam Deveney resign?

Saw the the pasd blog that the forensic audit cost taxpayers over $45,000. But it looks like there was a lot more than that stolen, misappropriated, whatever you call it.

Now will we be getting any of it back? How bout the $5 million they wasted on Kimberton Elementary?

Anonymous said...

What's the interest rate on the 100K loan?

Anonymous said...

Looks like we have 3 council members with heads on their shoulders.

How about a concerted effort to do away with the PA?

Anonymous said...

The forensic audit is now in the hands of the Chester Co. D A. I personally spoke to the Assistant D A and was told it will be looked at.They did not know if the office had received it as of Tues 9/8.
I asked her to read the article in the Mercury to catch up. After explaining to her what the paper reported and told her about unauthorized use of credit cards( $53,000)unaccounted for and reimbursement for charitable contributions she agreed that that is fraud and tax fraud if the person took a tax writeoff.
Also said to contact the bank and find out who signed the CC receipts to see who used them.
The taxpayers are the victim here not the school district.Somebody better be shaken in their boots and if they fessed up maybe there will be no jail time.
These interim superintendants have to STOP asking the police to drop the investigations on these people because if I get my way this will not just go away.
The next move is a class action lawsuit by the taxpayers to recupe the money.
Let the Authorities handle this the right way and hold the culprits accountable.

Speaking of blue things - have you noticed that many of our Country's Flags on the blue lamp posts are in bad shape.

Who's responsibility is it to take care of them? The Borough Hall (i.e. Taxpayers) or the downtown merchants (causing higher prices)?

Anonymous said...

Had to add to this:

PASD has spent $900k on legal bills this year. But the school board did publicly say we'll save $1.7 million as a result. Still waiting for proof.

Thanks for clue-ing me in! I did see one blue 'cage' by New Century Bank. Thought it was a bus stop of some sort. Had no idea it was a cage from the ferris wheel. I haven't noticed any others.

I am curious as to why Debra Johnston, the Chairwoman of the Planning Board is such an unpleasant woman. Why is she chairing that board? I would think (or at least hope) that the borough would want a more positive image. I've seen her snicker, laugh at people giving testimony, and just be plain rude by making faces and rolling her eyes at the public. To have this kind of behavior in public by a public official is embarrasing and needs to be stopped.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like Debra Johnson would be perfect for the clergy at Holy Ghost Church.

Anonymous said...

I agree with the Debra Johnston comment. She acts in a very disrespectful way toward people who are offering their opinion on issues. She exhibits very childish behavior when she disagrees with your opinion.

Thanks so much. I don't frequent a trailer park and rarely have reason to drive past VFCC. Petruccis? Missed it, but I'll look. 5th and Main- missed that one too. Thanks for pointing out such prominent Phoenixville hot spots (Petruccis not included)LOL.
Wow.

Anonymous said...

So why are these cages strewn around the area?

Anonymous said...

I way I understand it - is that these cages were part of a ferris wheel that was made here in Phoenixville at the foundry. This is our history and we should be proud to be able to have them. I think it is all being rehabed piece by piece. They are not "strewn" around town!

Anybody else get a mailing from the Borough with water testing results and leaf pickup schedule?

I think they meant to put the water/sewer/trash bill in with the other stuff since there was a return envelope with it.

Did they forget and will there be a second mailing with the bill? Just another waste of taxpayer's monies.

Anonymous said...

I was wodering the same thing. Now we will be charged a late fee.LOL

Anonymous said...

Yes, I got the leaf collection, water explanation and return evelope, but no bill. I was planning to hot-foot it to the Borough today as I figured they were going to give me a late fee for not paying my bill.

Karen, what's up with this? As it looks like it happened to many of us, it would be nice to have an explanation.

Ed Naratil said...

From the Borough's web site:
:

"The Borough of Phoenixville apologizes for anyconfusion due to the return envelope being included in the Water Quality Report, Leaf Collection, and Shred Event Notices.
The Quarterly Water, Sewer & Trash Bill will not be mailed out until October 2009. "

Guess those that are not on the internet or don't check the Borough's Home Page won't get this information until the local rag publishes on Saturday.

You don't need to publish this...

But FYI, your link to HFS Alumni is bad - it links to:

http://http//hfsalumni.org/

That should be http://hfsalumni.org

(extra "http//" in your link)

Also, while HFS is in the former St. Ann's building, the school itself is not just "formerly St. Ann's"....

It is formerly St. Ann's, St. Mary's, Holy Trinity, and Sacred Heart. It's a consolidated school (which now also includes St. Joe's from Spring City) and the alumni organization includes former students of all of those schools.

(As a former St. Mary's student, we sometimes feel slighted when HFS is considered "St. Ann's"... I'm sure the other parishes feel the same way.)

Karen said...

Anonymous 8:48 a.m., thank you for correcting my mistake!

I have fixed the link.

You are absolutely correct in the fact that Holy Family school is a consolidation of area Catholic schools, and should be recognized as such.

My apologies for the error.
